Virus Protection Systems (Pty) Ltd announces changes in provision of anti-Virus product range

22 February 2001

Virus Protection Systems (Pty) Ltd (VPS), a subsidiary company of Aqua Online, in which the CSIR has a minority shareholding, has decided to discontinue further development of the VPS product range. The product, initially developed by the CSIR as a unique South African anti-virus system, was transferred to VPS in 1999.

Following the decision not to support further technical development & distribution of the VPS product range, an agreement with SecureData has been negotiated to offer clients the option of migrating to the Trend Micro product range. VPS and Aqua Online have negotiated with SecureData to meet the commitments made through contracts with existing VPS clients. All enquiries and negotiations in this regard are handled by the VPS staff, or Aqua Online. For further information please call
+27 11 447-0877.

Although the discontinuation of the product, which was the only South African developed anti-virus product that has served the South African market for the past ten years, is a disappointment to CSIR, we are impressed by the dynamic and constructive way in which Aqua Online as majority shareholder in VPS have managed this initiative. We are proud of the relationship with Aqua Online and will continue to pursue business opportunities and ventures jointly with them, in pursuit of stimulating the local IT industry, especially regarding indigenous, or "home grown", products and services.
