Launch of CSIR's product development portal at SA Design Week

11 September 2001

A South African product development portal developed by the CSIR's National Product Development Centre (NPDC) goes on display on Wednesday, 12 September 2001, at the Design Africa Expo in the Sandton Convention Centre. The web-based, interactive tool, at www.productdevelopment.co.za, provides information on the full new product development process, as well as direct access to expertise and resources supporting competitive product development.

Aimed at product developers and inventors, www.productdevelopment.co.za has topical and relevant content, enhanced by easy navigation and effective search functionality, and provides links to local and international resources. It was well received at an earlier one-day seminar From Patent to Product on 8 September 2001.

As a joint initiative of the CSIR and the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, the CSIR NPDC and its activities were referred to by Min. Ben Ngubane during the opening of the SA Design Week. He highlighted the visionary new initiative of the NPDC to introduce computer-aided design (CAD) into secondary schools across South Africa. This strongly supports the objective of SA Design Week to create a national awareness and appreciation of the importance of design for the SA economy.

The range of offerings from the CSIR NPDC includes design support, materials engineering, production tooling, product prototyping and training in computer-aided technologies.
